Item A Systematic Review of the Applications of AI in a Sustainable Building’s Lifecycle(Buildings, 2024) Adewale, Bukola; Ene, Vincent Onyedikach; Ogunbayo, Babatunde Fatal; Aigbavboa, Clinton OhisBuildings significantly contribute to global energy consumption and greenhouse gas emis sions. This systematic literature review explores the potential of artificial intelegence (AI) to enhance sustainability throughout a building’s lifecycle. The review identifies AI technologies applicable to sustainable building practices, examines their influence, and analyses implementation challenges. The findings reveal AI’s capabilities in optimising energy efficiency, enabling predictive maintenance, and aiding in design simulation. Advanced machine learning algorithms facilitate data-driven anal ysis, while digital twins provide real-time insights for decision-making. The review also identifies barriers to AI adoption, including cost concerns, data security risks, and implementation challenges. While AI offers innovative solutions for energy optimisation and environmentally conscious practices, addressing technical and practical challenges is crucial for its successful integration in sustainable building practices.Item Adaptable Housing Strategies and the Perception of Apartment Dwellers(Springer Nature, 2026) Adewale, Bukola; Ekanem, NsikakabasiShelter has been identified as man’s second most important need after food as every human being primary seeks a roof over their heads to guard against harsh weather and predators. Countries around the world have established projects to provide accommodation for its homeless citizens through schemes like mass housing projects, and these mass housing schemes (especially apartment building typologies) seem to be experiencing a common phenomenon with its occupants, which is change. Throughout the time an apartment dweller spends in their home, they are likely to make significant changes to their living space. This study aims to uncover the perception of apartment dwellers on adaptable housing strategies and also deduce their level of propensity to embracing it. The study was carried out in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state and 400 questionnaires were distributed to apartment dwellers that reside in the major housing districts in Uyo—Ewet Housing estate, Osongama estate, Shelter Afrique, Federal Housing estate and Akwaima estate, to get their perception of these adaptable strategies. The results of the study have further rearranged strategies in a hierarchy of affinity, which developers can use as a guide when implementing these strategies. This study gives a basis for developing an intelligent system that will aid the delivery of adequate and adaptable housing.Item IMPACT OF CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENTS’ ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS IN COVENANT UNIVERSITY(International Conference on Energy and Sustainable Environment, 2021) Adewale, Bukola; Jegede, Foluke; Okubote, Feyisayo; Olagbadegun, MarvelousNigerian Schools of Architecture face the various challenges of out-dated design, declining conditions, and capacity utilisation pressures. The effects of these conditions are threats to the academic performance of the students. The study aimed at investigating the impact the learning environment has on the academic performance of students of Architecture at Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria. This research made use of quantitative and qualitative research approach. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire, and the IBM SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) was used for analysis. Results show that the classroom environment has effects on students' academic performance. This is due to their satisfaction and comfort in the learning environment. Findings also show that the comfort derived from facilities and physical components within the classroom affects their academic performance. Although the research findings have shown that the physical components of the classroom learning environment had no direct impact on the students' academic performance, based on the research it is recommended that visual learning aid should be maximised. Also, the classroom facilities should be improved to encourage students to make use of their classrooms. Further, the physical components classroom environment affects but does not have a direct impact on students' academic performance; however, the perception of students on these components should be explored to create a comfortable classroom environment.Item Users’ Perception of Compliance of Security Features with Defensible Space Principles in Selected Secondary Schools in Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria(3rd International Conference on Energy and Sustainable Environment, 2022) Jegede, Foluke; Adewale, Bukola; Ayara, E. J.; Faleti, M. O.The idea of preventing crime by strategically using the environment as tool has been explored for decades. Defensible space provides architectural strategies for effectively preventing crime by reorganizing the physical environment and giving inhabitants control over their surroundings. This study seeks to examine the security features allaying with defensible space in four selected secondary schools in Ota, Ogun state, Nigeria, with a view to making contributions on how to improve security in such environments for users. The study identifies areas for further improvements based on users' perception, towards enhancing security in the academic environments in Nigeria. Four selected secondary schools in Ota, publicly and privately owned was used for the study. The study used quantitative and qualitative research methods to obtain data from 149 students, in addition with 33 teachers from four secondary schools. The collected data were descriptively analysed with the use of SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) software. Results showed that there are evidences of elements of defensible space strategies, which are Territoriality and Natural surveillance that were adequately perceived and being implemented by the respondents. Deterioration of school buildings and poor road construction were seen. These were evidences of the elements of Milieu and Image, an indication of defensible space perception. Students dissatisfaction with overall school security was also revealed. The study further shows that appropriate maintenance strategies can help enhance the physical and security conditions of school environment in Nigeria.
