Item PoliticalEconomyofCOVID-19andtheImplicationonMediaManagementandSustainabilityinNigeria(Health Crises and Media Discourses in Sub-Saharan Africa,, 2022) Owolabi, ToyosiOlugbengaSamson; Nwantah, Nkiruka FavourThisstudyinvestigatesthepoliticaleconomyofgovernment’sresponsetotheCOVID-19pandemicinNigeriaanditsimplicationsformediamanagementandsurvival.Itisaqualitativeresearchthatreliesonprimaryandsecondarysourcesfordatagathering.ThestudydiscoversthattheungainlyanddiscriminatorypoliticaleconomyoftheNigeriangovernment’sresponsetotheCOVID-19pandemicisunfriendlytothemediaasitisisolatedandmadethemediaoperatingenvironmentunfavorableforgrowthandsustainability.ThestudyalsorevealsthatthepastbusinessmodelwherethemediarenderservicebeforebeingpaidanddisseminatenewscontentinhardcopywhilerelingonoldnewsconsumerscannolongersufficeduringtheCOVID-19era.Conclusively,thestudyhighlightssomecopingstrategiesformediamanagerswhichincludepullingresourcestogetherasthroughaconsortium,merger,andacquisitionofoutfitswithsimilareditorialfocus,raisingfundsfromthestockmarket,changingthebusinessmodelofservicebeforepayanddigitizationofcontents.ThestudyrecommendsthattheNigeriangovernmentinconjunctionwiththeinternationaldevelopmentagenciesshouldlaunchamediarecoveryplan(MRP)aswasdoneinIreland,theUnitedKingdom,andFrancetostabilizetheindustryandrepositionittofulfillitsstatutoryrolesinnationaldevelopment.
