Item Gig Regulation: A Future Guide for the Construction Industry(MDPI, Basel, Switzerland, 2025) Amusan, Lekan; Aigbe, Fortune; Aigbavboa, Clinton; Aliu, JohnTechnology has led to the advent of digitally enabled workforces like the gig workforce, but a number of issues confront this workforce. This study aims to identify the various issues facing the gig workforce as well as the regulatory measures and regulatory interactions proposed to guide stakeholders in addressing these challenges. This study is a review, with the methodology primarily based on secondary sources of data collection like journals and articles. This study reveals that the construction industry is not immune to the use of the gig workforce, as it often performs project-based construction work, jobs requiring highly specialized skills and commodity service jobs. This study also reveals that the gig workforce is confronted with primarily gig economy-induced platform-based challenges, such as the new nature of work, i.e., exploitative, precarious, and dangerous labour. Furthermore, this study also reveals that these issues can be addressed primarily through regulatory means and regulatory interactions between proposed regulatory measures and existing labour laws, which could be by Coordination, Competition, etc. This aligns with SDG 8, i.e., Decent Work and Economic Growth, as concerns issues related to their benefits, and SDG 10, i.e., Reduced Inequalities, as concerns issues related to their employment relations. The implication of this study for construction stakeholders relates to the development of new regulations and providing a valuable tool for analysing regulatory landscapes and understanding the dynamics of regulatory change, which contributes to scholarly discussions on fair labour practices and the protection of gig workers and helps inform policymaking that will help attract, motivate, retain, and engage more gig workers in the construction industry, which will foster proper workforce management.Item Adoption and Barriers of Engineered Bamboo Products in the Nigerian Construction Industry(Horizon Research Publishing (HRPUB), 2025) Amusan, Lekan M.; Ojelabi, Rapheal A.; Omuh, Ignatius O.; Ogunrinde, OlugbenroThe rise in the cost of conventional construction materials and the greenhouse effect from construction activities have been an issue of concern to stakeholders in the construction industry. Hence, efforts have been concentrated on developing low-cost, environmentally friendly and sustainable local materials to mitigate the greenhouse effect. The quest for the sustainable materials necessitates the study to examine the prospects of adoption of engineered bamboo products and the challenges militating against its use among construction professionals. A quantitative approach was adopted and 70 questionnaires were distributed among construction professionals with structural engineering background in selected firms across Lagos State. Data collected were processed using percentage, mean item score and KruskalWallis’s test. Facts garnered from the study revealed that engineered bamboo adoption for construction related works like ceiling, flooring, and reinforcement among others is not outstanding. The poor implementation of the engineered bamboo products is attributed to some challenges which include ‘high affinity for conventional materials’, ‘unavailability of bamboo products’ and ‘lack of machinery to refine raw bamboo’ among others. Therefore, the study recommends that stakeholders need to channel more resources into research and development and creating an enabling policy that can enhance the bamboo products adoption.Item THE EFFECTS OF PSYCHO-SOCIAL FACTORS ON CONSTRUCTION EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE(Cape Coast Technical University in Ghana, in collaboration with Arca Academic Ltd, 2026) Amusan, L.; Aigbavboa, C. O.; Jegede, O.; Ojelabi, R; Aderounmu, P.Purpose: The aim of the study was to assess the Influence of psychosocial factors like competence, emotional intelligence, and education on construction firms' employees, with a focus on improving their performance on the construction site. Design/Methodology/Approach: This study adopted a quantitative descriptive survey research design. A random sampling method was used to select 20 medium-sized construction companies and 100 respondents. 100 questionnaires were administered. Analysis of Variance tool [ANOVA]. The relative agreement index technique was used to analyse the data. Findings: The findings provide a comprehensive, empirically grounded understanding of the multidimensional nature of employee performance in the construction industry, highlighting the interplay among psychosocial, organisational, environmental, and socioeconomic factors in determining on-site performance. Research Limitation: The study focused exclusively on medium-sized construction companies, thereby excluding small- and large-scale construction firms. This restriction limits the comprehensiveness of the findings, as the organisational structures, resource capacities, workforce compositions, and operational practices of small and large construction firms may differ considerably from those of medium-sized companies. Practical Implication: It provides guidelines for project managers and professionals on understanding the following as a key requirement to improve on-site output: Wages should be paid on time, allowing construction workers to participate in professional conferences, which also greatly helps improve competence. Social Implications: The deployment of financial and non-financial incentives can induce higher performance by meeting workers' social needs. Originality and Value: The findings of this study firmly establish that emotional intelligence is not a peripheral or incidental factor in construction employee performance but rather a foundational psychosocial competency that underpins goal achievement, teamwork, and professional resilience on construction sites.Item Adaptable Housing Strategies and the Perception of Apartment Dwellers(Springer Nature, 2026) Adewale, Bukola; Ekanem, NsikakabasiShelter has been identified as man’s second most important need after food as every human being primary seeks a roof over their heads to guard against harsh weather and predators. Countries around the world have established projects to provide accommodation for its homeless citizens through schemes like mass housing projects, and these mass housing schemes (especially apartment building typologies) seem to be experiencing a common phenomenon with its occupants, which is change. Throughout the time an apartment dweller spends in their home, they are likely to make significant changes to their living space. This study aims to uncover the perception of apartment dwellers on adaptable housing strategies and also deduce their level of propensity to embracing it. The study was carried out in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state and 400 questionnaires were distributed to apartment dwellers that reside in the major housing districts in Uyo—Ewet Housing estate, Osongama estate, Shelter Afrique, Federal Housing estate and Akwaima estate, to get their perception of these adaptable strategies. The results of the study have further rearranged strategies in a hierarchy of affinity, which developers can use as a guide when implementing these strategies. This study gives a basis for developing an intelligent system that will aid the delivery of adequate and adaptable housing.Item Implementation of biophilic design principles for sustainable housing development(Frontier in Sustainable Cities, 2026) Sholanke, Anthony Babatunde; Babalola, Olatunde Danie; Oni, Oluwadamilola EnochReconnecting building occupants with nature while encouraging sustainability has become more important due to ongoing urbanization and growing environmental concerns. In order to enhance both the natural environment and the well-being of residents. This study investigated the role of biophilic design in sustainable housing, aiming to develop a framework that guides architectural decisions, fosters restorative living environments, and informs future designs that strengthen the human-nature connection. This research addresses a research gap, as the existing body of knowledge is limited in its investigation of how biophilic design principles can be effectively integrated into residential architecture, particularly sustainable housing, to enhance occupant well-being and environmental performance. With the aid of a qualitative approach, the research analyzed biophilic design principles adopted inhousing design and their impacts onsustainable housing delivery. A review of thirty-one articles published between 2004 and 2024 was conducted through internet-based searches in academic databases, including Scopus, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, ResearchGate, and the Covenant University Repository. The collected data were subjected to content analysis. The findings informed the development of a biophilic design framework and a corresponding architectural proposal. The results were presented descriptively, supported by visual architectural representations to enhance clarity and comprehension. The study proposed a framework for integrating biophilic design into sustainable housing, exemplified by a design constructed from upcycled metal shipping containers. Biophilic architecture offers innovative solutions in residential projects, fostering hope for the future of sustainable housing. The study highlighted the alignment of biophilic principles with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promoting well-being (SDG 3), urban sustainability (SDG 11), climate change mitigation (SDG 13), and biodiversity conservation in urban ecosystems (SDG 15). The research adds to the discourse on biophilic architecture in housing projects, showcasing its opportunities and applications for sustainable housing schemes.Item Compliance of Accessibility Features of Selected Shopping Malls with Universal Design Strategies in Nigeria(Civil Engineering and Architecture 13(4), 2025) Sholanke, Anthony Babatunde; Adisa, Ololade SimbiaShopping malls are public facilities that cater to all user groups. To achieve sustainable communities, shopping malls should be designed to meet the accessibility needs of all categories of users. This study assessed the compliance of accessibility features of selected shopping malls with universal design strategies in Nigeria to determine areas for improvement towards promoting inclusivity in the development of the built environment. The study adopted a qualitative research approach. Data from three shopping malls were collected using an observation guide, analysed through content analysis, and presented descriptively with photographs and a table to enhance understanding and provide clarity. The study discovered that while a majority of the accessibility strategies implemented in the malls were satisfactorily compliant with universal design strategies, some of the features did not meet universal design requirements. Key areas found to be lacking include accessibility features largely beneficial for people with disabilities, such as a lack of accessible car parks, slippery floor surfaces, and a lack of lower handrails where main handrails are provided along stairways and ramps for the benefit of people with short stature, and children. Others are the use of open risers, generally considered unsafe for users, and the absence of baby changing toilet facilities. The study suggests retrofitting the shopping malls with accessibility features found to be lacking, to cater for all user groups, including people with disabilities, without compromising the unctionality and aesthetic appeal of the shopping malls. The article is beneficial for policymakers, designers, researchers, and students towards the study, planning, and development of safe, resilient, sustainable, and inclusive environments in conformity with the 11th target of the 17 sustainable development goals.Item Adequacy of the national building code (2006) in promoting Universal Design practices in Nigeria.(Journal of Accessibility and Design for All (JACCES), Volume 15, Issue 2, 2025) Sholanke, Anthony Babatunde; Adisa, O.Universal design seeks to develop environments that are accessible to all users, fostering inclusivity and equal opportunity for everyone. Therefore, effective building regulations are essential to support and advance universal design in developing the built environment. This study examined accessibility provisions of Nigeria’s National Building Code (2006), which is an extensive document that provides set standards for how buildings should be designed, constructed and maintained in Nigeria. The National Building Code was examined to identify gaps hindering inclusivity in the built environment, thereby determining their adequacy in promoting universal design practices, towards enabling individuals to participate in society without physical barriers. The study is a review article that employed qualitative research methods to gather, analyse, and present data. A systematic textual analysis was conducted using secondary sources, including the NBC (2006), the 7 Principles of Universal Design, and key accessible design standards. The data were grouped into themes, and the content was analysed. A descriptive approach and thematic categories were employed to explain the findings. To achieve its findings, the study used two objectives, it examined the existing accessibility provisions of the National Building Code in relations to the requirements of Universal Design Principles and used the provisions found to determine the adequacy of the Code in promoting universal design practices in the development of the built environment. The findings revealed that although the Code contained some relevant accessibility provisions, several of them were vague, lacked detailed specifications or dimensions needed to ensure inclusivity. The study submitted that in its current state, the National Building Code (2006) operational in Nigeria is inadequate in promoting the ideals of universal design. The study recommends a detailed systematic revision of the code to address the identified shortcomings relating to accessibility.Item Identification of Gold targets using airborne geophysics and remote sensing data in part of northcentral Nigeria(Elsevier Inc., 2025) Oyesomi, Kehinde D.; Fadeyi, Solape S.; Adigun, Akeem; Ekhaguere, Osagie A.; Metwaly, MohamedThe exploration and utilization of economic mineral deposits are of paramount importance in driving the prosperity and progress of nations across the globe. An integrative approach of integrating aeromagnetic, airborne-radiometric, and remote-sensing methods was employed to assess gold mineralization zones within Paiko town in Niger state, northcentral Nigeria. Airborne-radiometric and remote-sensing datasets were utilized to map subsurface structures, lithological units, and hydrothermal alteration zones. The investigation delineated three major tectonic events along different directions: the ENE-WSW (D1) trending tectonic event, the WNW-ESE (D2) trending tectonic event, and NW-SE (D3) trending structural deformation event. The three deformation phases signify unique magnetic unit boundaries, lithological contacts, veins, and veinlets intrusions. These structures were interpreted as potential pathways for mineralization fluids. Moreover, the presence of high potassium-rich zones with low thorium/potassium ratio anomalies indicated potassium enrichments associated with sericite mica and K-feldspar minerals. The study also mapped various alterations of ferrous silicates, holding the potential to host gold and copper deposits, as well as endoskarn, epidot/chlorite/amphibole alterations, and phyllic minerals. Depth estimates derived from magnetic source parameters imaging techniques revealed that the mineralization targets in the area are relatively shallow, with depths ranging from the near-surface to less than 100 m. The delineation of mineralization zones in the study area convincingly demonstrates the effectiveness of integrating airborne geophysical and remote sensing data for exploring, developing, and managing subsurface mineral resources. This approach provides valuable insights into gold mineralization’s presence, distribution, and characteristics, facilitating informed decision-making in mineral resource exploration and utilization.Item Diagnosing Government Responsibilities in the Implementation of Public-Private Partnership System for Infrastructure Procurement(International Journal of Sustainable Development and Planning Vol. 20, No. 6, 2025-06) Ojelabi, Rapheal A.; Oyenubi, Adebayo; Oyeyipo, OpeyemiPublic-Private Procurement is a system that allows for collaboration between the government and private partners in infrastructure provision. However, researchers argued that the successful implementation of the procurement option rested more on the government's shoulders. Hence, the study aims to identify critical government roles and investigate their importance and performance in PPP projects in Nigeria using a survey approach. The targeted respondents are PPP stakeholders operating in Lagos and Abuja. However, due to the absence of comprehensive lists of the PPP stakeholders involved in PPP projects in Nigeria, a project based approach was used in attaining the representative samples for the study, including contractors, consultants, concessionaires, government agencies, and financiers. About 384 copies of questionnaires were randomly distributed to the sample representatives, and 274 copies were retrieved. The data generated were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical tools. Findings showed that all the roles identified are critical and showed significant interrelationships with each other.
