An avalanche of literature has addressed the concept of globalisation in the 21st century with diverse implications for international relations. A point of agreement is that the world has been reconfigured in more ways than one, following ~- the reconstruction of the international economic order, occasioned by the post-cold war international environment. However, scholars are yet to agree on whether or not the 'new world' has brought equal benefits to the countries of the world. What is incontrovertible and rather ironic, is that the economic dimension to globalisation presents the greatest opportunities and yet portends the· greatest danger in international relations. Perhaps, the single explanation for this is that economic globalisation is rooted in wealth of r1ations and therefore, defined by the boundaries of unequal exchange. The thrust of Nigeria-South Africa relations in the post-cold war international system is caught in the web of these· unequal exchanges. It is against this background that this paper examines Nigeria-South Africa relations within the context of unequal excha nges that characterise economic globalisa tion. The paper argues that, the extent to which Nigeria and South Africa are able to resolve this dilemma, to that extent can they maximise the benefits of economic globalisation as well as reduce the dangers inherent therein.
